Silver City New Mexico
Silver City, located in the southwestern part of New Mexico, is the county seat for Grant County, and is home to approximately 11,000 people. Once known as San Vicente de la Ciénega (St. Vincent of the Marsh), the site where the city is currently located was once an Apache campsite, and saw its first sizable population with the arrival of American prospectors in the 1860s. Silver City was founded in 1870, shortly after silver ore was found in nearby Chloride Flats. Silver City’s roots as a mining town are still quite evident, with the nearby operations of the Phelps Dodge Corporation (now Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc.) in the Tyrone and Chino mines. The Chino mine was once the largest open-pit mine in the world, and one of the oldest in the world. Apaches, the Spanish, Mexicans, and then Americans, have all extracted copper and ore from the site. New Mexico Normal School was founded in Silver City in 1893, and is still a thriving university, although under the name Western New Mexico University (since 1963). WNMU offers 70 majors, with graduate, bachelor, and associate degrees available. The school’s museum maintains one of the world’s largest collections of Mimbres pottery. Countryside & Small Stock Journal — The magazine of modern homesteading. Promoting self-reliance and simple life style through home food production, gardening, cooking, food preservation and other homesteading techniques.. Some of New Mexico’s largest ranches can be found near or in Grant county. Large vast NM ranches for sale can be found locally or perhaps mountain land for the getaway hunting lodge.
